This year’s festival celebrates the 50th anniversary of our Society and the 250th anniversary of the United States. For fifty years, our members have worked to preserve family histories, historical records, and community stories. As America reaches its 250th year, we are reminded that genealogy keeps history alive by connecting us to the people who lived it. Through this special festival, we honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire future generations to continue the search for their roots.

Unearthing Sugar Land's Bitter Past

10:15AM–11:15AM

In February 2018, construction crews in Sugar Land, Texas, uncovered a dark, forgotten chapter of American history. Beneath the disturbed earth lay 95 unmarked graves containing remains of African American males. The men, believed to be associated with the local prison – and presumably victims of Texas’ "convict leasing" system – suffered inhumane labor conditions in order to build local infrastructure. Their discovery in this crude unmarked cemetery has sparked national attention, and the site now holds a Texas Historical Landmark distinction. This lecture will examine the significance of the "Sugar Land 95" discovery and the ongoing efforts to identify them.
